The ancient Egyptian held strong beliefs in the divine. But how well do you know the gods and goddesses they worshipped?
It’s supposed that they worshipped at least 1,500 gods and goddesses in total. Some of these gods were pictured in a human-like form, others were part or entirely animal. For example, Anubis (who guided the path to the afterlife) was shown to look like a jackal; Horus (the god of the sky) was often shown as a falcon or a falcon-headed man.
Some gods were good like Bes, who frightened away bad spirits during the times of childbirth, sex and sleep. Other gods were terrifying like Ammit, who was also known as ‘The Devourer of the Dead’.
With so many different Egyptian gods and goddesses, Egyptian mythology can seem confusing. You may feel you know little about each of the gods, what they looked like and what they were said to control.
But you may be surprised by how much popular culture is influenced by these ancient deities. They have inspired hundreds of the film, TV and video games we enjoy today.
Take the character Vanessa Ives in the popular TV series Penny Dreadful for example; she’s supposed to be an incarnation of Amunet, the goddess of air and invisibility. Maybe you’ve played the online slots game Pyramid: Quest for Immortality; look in the corner of the screen as you play and you’ll spot Anubis.
So it’s possible you know more about the Egyptian gods than you think.
We’re ready to put your knowledge to the test. On this page is a quiz designed to let you find out how much you know about the gods and goddesses of ancient Egypt. See how many you can answer correctly, then pass it on to your friends and family to see if they can beat your score.
